Business correspondence, legal materials, bills, and receipts from the law firm Aycock, Fleming and Moore deal with the various cases of Fleming and his partner Lawrence Moore. Legislative correspondence concerns commercial issues; transportation, medical, and liquor legislation, including prohibition; taxes; the establishment of water, light, and sewage works in Greenville; election laws; and local government in several eastern North Carolina towns. Also includes correspondence with the Coca-Cola Company concerning a bill prohibiting the sale of any drink containing caffeine, cocaine or any coal-tar preparation. Materials regarding Fleming's personal life, including correspondence and membership cards, reflect his social life; the building of his home in Greenville; and his activities with various organizations and clubs, including the Knights of Khorassan, the State Club, and the Knights of Pythias. Also contains correspondence and materials advertising an early 20th century cure for asthma and materials concerning attempts by Fleming's family and friends to reveal his part in establishing East Carolina Teachers' Training School. |

| Biographical note | James Lawson Fleming (1867-1909), a native of Pitt County, N. C., was a Greenville, N.C., attorney and member of the North Carolina Senate. In addition to being a partner in the law firm Fleming, Aycock and Moore, Fleming was active in local politics. During his two terms in the N.C. Senate, Fleming was responsible for introducing a bill that led to the establishment in Greenville of East Carolina Teachers' Training School (now East Carolina University). |
